Processing Prescriptions After a Price Code Change

This topic is intended for Independent pharmacies only and is not applicable to Rexall pharmacies.

When processing or managing a prescription for a product that has underwent a Price Code change, additional steps may be required to ensure the correct prescription quantities are entered.

Refilling Prescriptions With Repeats Remaining

If a prescription with repeats remaining is refilled, a prompt in Rx Detail informs that a Price Code change occurred and asks you to validate the old and new prescription quantities. This prompt will not appear if the last fill occurred after the Price Code change.

The Recommended QA and Recommended Qty are calculated by multiplying the Qty Remaining and Previous Qty by the pack size. These values are read-only. You can change the new QA and Qty in Rx Detail.

If only a partial fill remains, the Recommended QA and Qty will be blank but can be edited in Rx Detail.

Upon selecting OK:

  • The existing prescription is reauthorized and the recommended values in the Price Code Change window are pre-populated in Rx Detail.

  • An alert will appear in Rx Detail indicating the Price Code has changed and reminding users to bill the prescription in units.

Upon Fill, the last page of the prescription Audit History is printed for the user to validate.

If the prescription was part of a batch or background processed (i.e., IVR, Web Refill, Auto Refill), it will not be processed automatically to completion. You must manually process the prescriptions afterwards and respond to the Price Code Change prompt.

Refilling Prescriptions with No Repeats Remaining or Expired Prescriptions

Similar to the process outline above, if a prescription with no repeats remaining is refilled, an alert in Rx Detail informs that a Price Code change has occurred and reminds you to bill the prescription in units. This also applies to filling prescriptions that are expired based on the Rx Expiry Date entered in the Rx Detail Extended tab. No prompt will appear for the Price Code change.
